So I just got back from New York City! Yay!
We stayed in Williamsburg in Brooklyn in a tiny little box of a hotel room (it’s called Pod Brooklyn). It was pretty perfect for us since we weren’t staying in the room for long stretches of time.
We managed to scratch some lines off of my bucket list, such as: Brooklyn Botanic Garden, MoMA, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, I am not taking them totally off the list as all of these things are ever changing entities, so it will be worth it to visit again. Especially the botanic garden. It is early spring as of writing this, and very little was in bloom. So while I was pretty thrilled to see magnolias and the first buds of cherry blossoms, I will be excited to go again and see the rose garden in full bloom.
This trip was a honeymoon of sorts for me and the Hubs (for the record, we’ve been married for six years), but he was happy to run around the museums with me. Being a feminist, I have been wanting to explore feminism in my own art, but have been trying to figure out how I want to express it. We went to the Brooklyn Museum, which has a wing devoted to feminist art including the iconic piece, The Dinner Party, by Judy Chicago. Honestly, a lot of the art in the exhibit fell flat for me, belonging to a different era of feminism and culture than I feel like I can relate to.
But then I came across a still life photograph of roses against a black background subtly called, The Rose Garden, by Sarah Jones. The photo shows “the back view of the growing roses, subverting the flower’s original symbolic meaning by portraying its unseen or less-desirable elements” (Brooklyn Museum). And that set off a light bulb. You should expect to see some roses in an upcoming series.
The TLDR: Three museums and a garden, with a lot of delicious food along the way. Roses coming soon.
Thanks for existing.
